Speech & Language Milestones (Birth to 5) — UK Guide
What to expect from your child's speech and language from birth to age 5, and when it's worth getting advice.
Children don’t read the milestone charts — they develop at their own pace. Still, milestones are a useful map. Here’s a calm guide to what’s typical, and when a chat with an SLT is worth it.
Ranges, not deadlines. If your child is a bit behind on one thing, that’s often fine. Several things, or losing skills they had, is worth checking. Book a free call if you’re unsure.
By 12 months
- Babbles with changing sounds (“bababa”, “dada”)
- Responds to their name and simple words like “no”
- Uses gestures — waving, pointing, reaching
- Enjoys back-and-forth games (peekaboo)
By 18 months
- Says several single words
- Points to show you things
- Follows simple instructions (“get your shoes”)
- Understands far more than they can say
By 2 years
- Around 50+ words, starting to join two (“more juice”)
- Follows two-part instructions
- Names familiar objects and people
- Enjoys simple pretend play
By 3 years
- Short sentences; strangers understand about half
- Asks lots of “what” and “why”
- Follows longer instructions
- Plays alongside and starts to play with others
By 4 years
- Tells simple stories and connected sentences
- Mostly understood by people outside the family
- Understands time words (today, later)
- Enjoys jokes and silliness
By 5 years
- Clear, grammatical speech most of the time
- Holds a proper conversation, takes turns
- Follows multi-step instructions
- Understands and uses “because”, “so”, “if”
When to get advice
Talk to an SLT if your child:
- Isn’t babbling by 12 months or has few words by 2
- Loses words or skills they previously had (get advice promptly)
- Is very hard to understand at 3+
- Gets frustrated trying to communicate
- Isn’t connecting or interacting the way you’d expect
